Bhubaneswar: In a major development, the Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik on Friday sacked Agriculture Minister Damodar Rout from the Council of Ministers over his several controversial remarks in past few days.

“I strongly disapprove of anyone who makes derogatory remarks against any caste, creed or religion. I have dismissed Dr Rout from the Council of Ministers. A letter has been sent this evening to the honourable Governor to accept his dismissal,” said the Chief Minister while announcing his decision in this regard.

Damodar Rout has invited severe criticism in last few days over his ‘beggar’ remark on Brahmin community.

In October, the veteran BJD leader mocked a woman politician saying  ‘Swami Chhadi Anganwadi’ during a party programme in Jajpur district that went viral in no time on social media.

In another sensitive case of farmer suicide in November, Dama Rout allegedly told reporters that the deceased Bargarh farmer Brunda Sahu was not from his party and he might be a man of BJP.

More than anything else, he recently courted controversy by saying that Jayee Rajguru was not a freedom fighter.

Meanwhile, Panchayati Raj Minister Pradeep Maharathy has been given additional charge of Agriculture and Fisheries department while Finance Minister Shashi Bhusan Behera got the Public Enterprises portfolio.
