Odisha Cabinet gives nod to State Legislative Council formation

Bhubaneswar: In an important decision, the State Cabinet today gave its nod to a draft proposal for the formation of much-touted State Legislative Council. The draft would be placed for approval in the upcoming winter session of the State Assembly.

The draft got the approval at a Cabinet meeting which was held at the Odisha Secretariate and was chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Along with the draft for legislative council the meeting also approved as many as eight other key proposals, informed Parliamentary Affairs Minister Bikram Keshari Arukh.

The legislative council will comprise of 49 members, he added.

The Odisha Government which was keen to constitute a legislative council in line with some other states in the country had formed a five-member special committee for the purpose in 2015. The committee comprising of State Commerce and Transport Minister Nrusingha Sahu, BJD MLAs Pramila Mallik and Manohar Randhari, Congress MLA Bhujabal Majhi and BJP MLA Nitesh Gangdev made extensive visit to Bihar, Telengana, Maharashtra and Karnataka States to study the functioning of legislative councils there.

The Committee submitted its study report to CM on August 3.
