Odisha Bus Tragedy: Police registers case against driver

Cuttack: Odisha police has registered a case in the tragic bus accident which took place over Mahandi River near Cuttack and took the lives of ten persons yesterday.  The police have filed the case against the driver of the bus.

According to reports, Jagatpur Police has registered a case under Section 279, 337, 338 and 304(A) of IPC against Khageshwar Muduli, the bus driver who is currently under treatment in SCB Medical College and Hospital.

Meanwhile, the Commerce & Transport department has ordered a probe. It has formed a four-member team to probe the incident.

Cuttack RTO, Cuttack MVI and NHAI Engineers and Jagatpur Police Station IO are the four members of the team which has been directed to end its probe by tomorrow.

Notably, a private bus named ‘Jagannath’ (OD35 A 0211) fell 30 feet below into the river bed after hitting a buffalo while it was on its way to Cuttack from Talcher.

While ten people died, 50 others including the bus driver and helper were injured due to the accident.

Of the 50 injured, 42 of them are undergoing treatment in SCB Hospital and eight others have been admitted to different private hospitals according to their wish.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and others condoled the loss of lives and wished the speedy recovery of the injured.

Odisha government also has announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the next of the kin of the deceased and free treatment for all those injured in the incident.
