Odisha: Brown sugar worth Rs 1 crore seized, one held

Balasore: The Excise officials arrested a person for possessing 1 kg of brown sugar worth Rs 1 crore in Mill Badi area of Station Bazaar area under Jaleswar police limits in Odisha’s Balasore district on Wednesday.

The arrested accused has been identified as Sapan Kumar Pradhan. He had been running drug trade in Mill Badi area for a long time, sources said.

Based on intelligence inputs, the joint team of Central Excise intelligence wing of Cuttack and Excise officials in Jaleswar carried out a raid at Pradhan’s house in the wee hour of today.

Apart from brown sugar, a gun was also seized from Pradhan’s house.

Soon after the seizure of the substance, an FIR under the relevant sections of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act was registered against the accused with the Jaleswar police station.

“This is one of the biggest seizures of narcotics in the State this year,” said a senior Excise official.
