Odisha : Appeal to name city road after mountaineer Kalpana Dash

Bhubaneswar: In a bid to pay tribute to Odia mountaineer late Kalpana Dash, a group of social activists have appealed the State government to name a road in the capital city here in Odisha after her.

A three-member team led by social activist Rudra Prasanna Rath on Friday called on Governor Prof. Ganeshi Lal and requested to name the road stretching from Jayadev Vihar square to iconic Kalinga Stadium here as the ‘Kalpana Dash Road’.

On his part, the Governor reportedly told the social activists that he would draw the attention of the State government in this regard.

Sources said, the social activists have planned to submit a memorandum, signed by 3000 supporters, before the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Sports Minister Tushar Kanti Behera, BMC Mayor and Commissioner to press their demand to name the said road after the mountaineer.

Kalpana Dash was the first mountaineer from Odisha to scale Mount Everest. She scaled Mount Everest on 21 May 2008, along with a team of five members from the United States, Canada and Nepal.

On 23 May 2019, the 52-year-old mountaineer passed away at the Everest Balcony area while descending from the summit.
