Odisha: All old cars to have high security number plate

Bhubaneswar: The Department of Transportation has decided to install high-security number plates or High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on all new and old vehicles.

Despite repeated warnings, all vehicles do not install a high-security registration plate (HSRP) due to which the transport department will be taking tough action.

An important meeting has been scheduled to be chaired by the Chief Secretary on May 6 where discussions will take place and strict action will be taken against the law breakers.

It is to be noted that, the HSRP is only being installed in the new vehicles that are being bought from the showroom.

In 2016, the State Department of Transportation ordered all vehicle dealers to install high-security number plates. It was also stated that no registration certificate will be available for new vehicles without the HSRP. However, most new vehicles still do not install an HSRP while the old vehicles do not change the pre-existing number plates.

The car thieves are able to replace the old number plates on vehicles easily. There are also instances where a citizen either changes the number plate or destroys it. As a result, the officials face issues while issuing online challan against the lawbreakers.

Therefore, the Department of Transportation has decided to install high-security number plates on all new and old vehicles.

Several questions have also been raised such as whether people will have to pay in order to install high-security number plates on old vehicles, whether people will buy them from a government-run agency or buy it from any private agency, and when will the rule be imposed in Odisha. The discussions will take place on these topics in the upcoming meeting on May 6. Adding to it, the fine amount for breaking the rule is yet to be ascertained.
