Odia Youth Among 6 Indians Missing After Russia Gas Ship Explosion

Sambalpur: 6 Indian nationals, including an Odia Sailor have gone missing after a powerful gas tanker explosion off Russia coast on January 21.

The Odia youth has been identified as Siddharth Meher. Meher, 24, is a resident of Sambalpur and was among 15 crew members including 7 Turkish nationals, 7 Indians and an intern from Libya on the ship ‘Maestro’.

The ship on which Meher was onboard caught fire in the Kerch Strait, which separates mainland Russia and the annexed Crimea.

As per reports, two vessels namely ‘Candy’ and ‘Maestro’ were carrying a total of 32 crew members. The fire broke out when one of the ships exploded during a gas transfer, setting another vessel ablaze in the sea on January 21.

The search operation to rescue Meher started on Wednesday after four Indian sailors viz. Harish Jogi, Sachin Singh, Ashish Ashok Nair and Kamleshbhai Gopalbhai Tandel were rescued by the Russian authorities. The Indian embassy in Moscow is in touch with the Russian Authorities to rescue the remaining Indian sailors as soon as possible.
