Nurse allegedly beaten up after patient’s death in Odisha

Koraput: A staff nurse of Koraput hospital was allegedly attacked by the family members of a patient who died while undergoing treatment in the hospital here on Thursday.

According to reports, one Krupamani Sunamudi of Talagumandi village of Narayanpatna was admitted to the hospital after she sustained burn injuries. However, the 60-year-old lady with 70 percent burn injuries breathed her last while undergoing treatment.

Alleging medical negligence, the kin of Sunamudi allegedly manhandled a nurse of the hospital, following which the nurse filed a police complaint with the Town police. Based on her complaint, police detained four family members of the deceased patient.

“A woman identified as Krupamani Sunamudi of Talagumandi village died while undergoing treatment in Koraput hospital as she had sustained 70 percent burn injuries. However, alleging medical negligence, her kin manhandled a nurse of the hospital. We have detained two sons and two daughters of the deceased woman. Investigation is on. We will hand over the body to the family members after conducting autopsy,” said IIC, Town police station.

On the other hand, the family members of Krupamani Sunamudi rejected the allegation of the staff nurse claiming that Sunamudi was neglected by the medical staff even though her condition was serious.

Laxmipur MLA Kailash Chandra Kulesika arrived on the spot to compromise the issue. But, said that negligence in the government hospital is a daily affair and should not be done. “I came here after getting information about the matter. However, the hospital staff should not harass the common people rather treat them with care. We will try to compromise on the issue after the completion of postmortem,” said Kulesika.
