Keonjhar: In a bid to create awareness on road safety and use of helmet among the people, the temple authorities of Ghatagaon Maa Tarini temple under Ghatagaon police limits of the district have taken a unique step yesterday.

According to reports, the district police with the support of the temple trust committee launched the awareness drive on road safety stressing on the use of helmet in view of the growing rate of road accidents.

The trust committee of the 600-year-old temple agreed to refuse conducting puja unless the owner of the two-wheeler comes along with a helmet.

They also displayed a sign with a message “Sorry, No Puja Of Motorcycles Will Be Performed Without Helmet” in both English and Odia languages to make the people aware of their decision.

Sources said that at least 50 new vehicles are brought for the puja every day and at special occasions (auspicious days like sankranti) the toll rises to 100 or more.

Keonjhar SP Jayanarayan Pankaj, Ghatagaon SDPO Silverious Toppe, Local sarpanch Annapurna Dehury and trust board member Anand Chandra Singh were present during the launching of the awareness drive.

The unique initiative of the district police and trust committee members has been highly appreciated by the people across the district.
