Cuttack: Finally solving the Nirjhar Behera murder case, police on Friday arrested the main accused from Cuttack. Just two days before his marriage, Nirjhar was brutally murdered on January 7 near Birupa river bridge in Choudwar.

The accused has been identified as Sambit Senapati, a friend of the victim.

Informing on the arrest Trinath Mishra, Cuttack Sub Division-I ACP said police found a link of illicit love affair to the incident.

“The accused Sambit had an illicit affair with the girl of Choudwar with whom the victim’s marriage had been fixed and the ring ceremony had already been held. The illicit relationship has been established from the mobile phone chat message history of the accused. This happens to be the cause of the murder,” said Mishra.

“Sambit who happens to be a distant brother-in-law of the girl as well as a friend of Nirjhar had developed an illicit affair with the former. After Nirjhar got his ring ceremony done, Sambit went edgy and entered into arguments with him on several occasions in past few days. However, Sambit finally hatched a plan to eliminate Nirjhar and called him up for a meeting on Birupa bridge on the day of the incident. Sambit attacked him with a bill-hook bought from College Chhak before. After the murder, Sambit went underground and kept changing his hideouts on a regular basis. Jagatpur Police caught him from Cuttack Railway Station post tracking his mobile phone while preparing to escape from the state,” he added.
