Newborn snatched by monkey found dead in Cuttack

Cuttack: In a tragic turn of events, the 16-day-old newborn boy, who had been snatched from his parents on Saturday was recovered dead from a well in Talabasta village in Banki block of the district early this morning.

The body of the newborn was spotted floating inside a well located in the backyard of his home by some locals who had gone to fetch water from the well. Police reached the spot and fished out the body with the help of firemen after being intimated.

Police have sent the body of the newborn for postmortem and are waiting for the report to decide on the next course of action.

The deceased newborn who happens to be the first child of Ramakrushna Nayak of Talabasta village had been snatched away by a monkey at around 6 AM in the morning yesterday, while his father was asleep and mother out to attend the nature’s call. However, Nayak’s wife while running home had spotted the monkey carrying the baby.

A massive joint search operation by police, fire service personnel and forest officials was launched in the village by the evening yesterday based on a complaint filed by the missing newborn’s family. At least five teams, each comprising of 10 members, took part in the operation. However, the teams failed to trace the monkey despite all efforts.

Meanwhile, the mother of the deceased newborn has been admitted to Banki Hospital after she fell sick following the incident.
