Naveen doubts on BJP’s claim of winning 120 seats in OdishaBhubaneswar: While the war over numbers for the 2019 general elections continues between BJD and BJP, BJD supremo and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday expressed his doubt about the BJP’s claim of winning 120 seats in the state.

“I doubt very much that they will get so many seats,” said Patnaik when asked on the BJP’s claim of winning 120 seats in Odisha. The CM said this before leaving for Baripada to inaugurate the Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College & Hospital.

BJD and BJP continued to fling numbers at each other claiming to emerge victorious in the 2019 general elections with a thumping margin, after BJP national President Amit Shah began his ‘Mission Odisha’ campaign with a target to win 120 Assembly seats during his last visit to the state.

“Amit Shah had set the target of 120 seats after analysing the political environment in Odisha during his last tour in July,” said Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on his arrival to the city yesterday. Backing Pradhan, Odisha BJP in-charge Arun Singh had also claimed that the party will win 120 out of the 147 seats in Odisha while the BJD, Congress and others will share the remaining seats among themselves.

On the other hand, BJD Vice President and Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Surjya Narayan Patro claimed that the regional outfit will pocket at least 123 seats. Describing Patro’s claim as his ‘personal assessment’, BJD spokesperson Prashant Nanda went one up on him saying he ruling party was aiming to win all 147 seats in the Assembly.

Interestingly, the Odisha unit of the Congress, which is struggling to set its house in order, has said it would win 85 seats. Veteran Congress leader Sura Routray claimed that the grand old party will return to power winning 85 seats in the upcoming elections and the rest will be shared by BJD and BJP.

The ongoing tug of war between BJD and BJP is likely to intensify with the beginning of Shah’s ‘Mission Odisha’ campaign today.
