Nationwide Transport Strike, Heavy Rains hit normal life in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The 24-hour nationwide transport strike called by the Transport Workers’ Federation and incessant rains virtually paralysed normal life in several parts of Odisha on Tuesday.

Auto rickshaws, taxi cars, private-run buses, trucks and other luggage carriers remained off the roads across the state due the strike. As vehicular communication came to standstill in major cities and towns, commuters had a narrowing time reaching their destinations.

The protest is against the proposed amendments to the Indian Motor Vehicles Act that would open up the road transport sector to monopolies and render lakhs of workers jobless.

The nationwide stir has been called by the All India Road Transport Workers Federation and different trade unions including the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS), and Labour Progressive Federation (LPF).

Moreover, heavy rains lashed many parts of the state. Normal life was hit in the state capital of Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and many other places due to continuous rain and waterlogging in low-lying areas that snapped road links in several places.
