Mrutyunjay Mohapatra assumes office as IMD Director

Bhubaneswar: Odisha-born weather scientist Mrutyunjay Mohapatra assumed his office as the Director General of Meteorology of India Meteorological Department (IMD) today.

Mohapatra, affectionately known as the “Cyclone Man of India”, has earned a reputation by accurately predicting the path of ferocious cyclones time and again in the past. A Scientist ‘G’ in the IMD he had been appointed to the post of Director General of it on June 4.

The eminent weather scientist is also serving as the Permanent Representative of India with the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and Member of Executive Council, WMO currently.

Notably, born in Odisha on 12 August 1995, Mohapatra joined IMD in 1992 and was working in Odisha when the Super Cyclone of 1999 struck the coast killing more than 15,000 people.
