More sluice gates to be opened at Hirakud dam today

Sambalpur: To tackle the rising water level in the reservoir due to heavy rain in the upper catchment areas of river Mahanadi, the Hirakud dam authorities have decided to open few more gates today.

As per the report, at least 16 more gates of the dam at around 11.30 am to maintain the water level between 619 ft-620 ft at the reservoir.

To release season’s first floodwater the Hirakud authorities have opened the first sluice gate yesterday as the water at the reservoir crossed 618.69 ft against the Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 630 ft.  The Sluice Gate 7 of Left Spillway of the dam was opened at 11.40 am and closed at 2 pm considering the heavy flow of floodwater on the downstream of the dam.

Notably, there are 64 sluice gates including 24 on the right and 40 on the left side of the Hirakud dam to release floodwater. Each sluice gate has a capacity to discharge 16,440 cusec of water.
