Modi hails tea-seller from Odisha in Mann Ki Baat

New Delhi: A day after his visit to Odisha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday hailed a tea-seller and social worker D Prakash Rao during his “Mann Ki Baat” programme today.

Addressing the nation in 44th edition of his monthly ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme aired on All India Radio today, Modi lauded Rao’s efforts to provide quality education to slum children in Cuttack by selling tea.

“D Prakash Rao, from Odisha’s Cuttack has been selling tea for the past 50 years. He spends 50% of his income on the education of more than 70 poor children. His life is an inspiration to all,” said the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister also had personally met Rao and his students during his visit to Cuttack yesterday.

Speaking to the reporters, Rao said, “I find no words to explain my happiness for the appreciation that the honourable Prime Minister gave me and my students. He met us during his Cuttack visit yesterday and spent around 20 minutes discussing several issues related to my school and its students. Modi sir also said that he wants to have Sabzi milaake Daal (Daalma) with us.”

Prakash Rao, who was forced to leave his studies midway in Class 11 due to family problems, has understood well value and importance of education which is why he has been running a primary school ‘Asha o Aswasana’ (that offers education from class I to V standard) for underprivileged children from slums in the Silver City. He has hired a teacher and bears the entire cost from his tea stall earnings.
