Puri: At least 21 houses were reduced to ashes and assets worth lakhs lost after miscreants set those on fire over a dispute between two groups in Machhapada village under Gualipada panchayat in the district last night.
As per the report, a verbal duel erupted between Halu Mohanty and Bhagirathi Swain of the village last night over a long-standing dispute. As the altercation intensified Halu lost his cool and torched a house of Bhagirathi.
The fire spread very rapidly and engulfed at least 21 houses belonging to 11 families living in the neighbourhood before fire tenders from Delang rushed to the spot and doused it.
Properties worth lakhs including furniture, food items and electronic good were gutted in the blaze.
Villagers who lost their home to the fire lodged a complaint at Delang Police Station in connection with the case demanding action against the accused.
Police have detained the accused in the case of late.
