Angul: Throwing an open challenge to police, a group of unidentified miscreants looted lakhs of rupees and valuable jewellery from Angul Indian Bank Branch on Saturday after putting the staffs at gun point.

As per the eyewitnesses, around 3-4 masked robbers barged into the branch, which is located beside the Main Road near Harimahuri Square, one of the most crowded market place in Angul town, at around 10.30 AM in the morning. They started threatening the Manager with a gun and ordered him to open the strong room. As the manager showed some resistance, the looters thrashed him mercilessly and snatched away the mobile phones of all the staffs as well as some customers who were present at the spot during the loot.

The looters grabbed cash along with gold and silver jewelleries from the bank’s lockers later and fled the spot.

While the whole loot episode lasted for around 15 minutes, Angul police reached the spot immediately and started investigation. It has also sealed all the roads connecting Angul town to prevent looters from sneaking into the neighbouring districts.

A group of unidentified burglars had looted Rs 33 lakh and jewellery from the Angul Andhra Bank branch located at the Angul Bazar Square on Aril 7 this year in a similar fashion. Police is still empty handed in the case.
