Baripada: Unidentified miscreants reportedly dug up the grave of Maharaja Sri Ramchandra Bhanja Deo in a frantic search for some hidden treasure like gems, jewels, gold coins and other valuables in Baripada of Mayurbhanj district in Odisha on Tuesday. Police are yet to trace the unidentified miscreants.
According to sources, a man identified as Fakir Chandra Nayak owns the land near the grave of Bhanja Deo. Through his land, the miscreants dug up a huge tunnel in search of the said hidden treasure.
The matter came to the fore after Fakir, who resides in Bhubaneswar, reached Baripada and lodged a police complaint in this connection.
On being alerted, Mayurbhanj Maharaja Praveen Chandra Bhanja Deo also reached the spot and took stock of the situation.
“There have been rumours that a huge amount of hidden treasures have been buried along with the body of the Maharaja when he died. So, the miscreants might have believed the rumours and tried to dig the grave to take out the precious things,” Praveen said.
Meanwhile, locals demanded immediate arrest of the miscreants.
