Minor tribal girl writes to district administration to stop her marriage Bhawanipatna: A 13-year-old tribal girl on Monday wrote a letter to Kalahandi district Collector requesting to stop her early marriage arranged by her drunkard father.

The class VII student of Kathaghara Kasturba Gandhi Residential School under Thuamul Rampur block of the district alleged that her father had arranged her wedding with another drunkard man and wanted to forcibly marry her off during Dussehra.

The minor’s father even had a fight with the school authorities as they did not permit the girl to go on holiday. Finding no source of solace, the girl took a bold step and wrote to the district administration to stop her marriage as she wanted to study further.

“My father wanted me to marry during this Dussehra. But, I don’t want. I want to study further so wrote a letter to the district Collector,” said the girl.

A three-member panel of the district child protection unit reached the girl’s house at Turibhejuguda on the direction of Collector Anjan Kumar Manik and recorded her statement.

They also counselled her parents about the negative-effects of child marriage and forbade them to marry her off till she becomes 18 years old.
