Minor Arrested For Cheating Through Fake Facebook Profiles Of Politicians And Bureaucrats

Sambalpur: A 17-year-old was today arrested for allegedly creating fake Facebook profiles of several eminent personalities including ministers and legislators of Western Odisha and taking monetary benefits.

Police said that the minor boy hailing from Sambalpur Town had created around 100 several Facebook profiles of important people including the Sambalpur district collector, health minister Naba Kishore Das, BJP MLA Jayanarayan Mishra and senior Congress leader Narasingha Mishra.

“He used to send friend requests to people known to these important personalities and chat with them. Later he used to ask for monetary help from them. He had even received a number of mobile phones by using similar tactics,” said SP, Sambalpur, Sanjeev Arora.

Police said that the accused a high school dropout was arrested after the vice chairman of Sambalpur municipality, Siddhartha Saha brought the matter to the police. “The accused had demanded Rs 1000 help from Saha. Saha with the help of police deposited the money and police managed to nab the accused by tracing the bank account number,” said a police official.

Police said that the accused was earlier arrested by Sambalpur Town police on charges of impersonation. “We have also sought help from IT experts to ascertain the exact number of fake profiles created by the accused.  The accused will be produced before the Juvenile Justice Board today,” added the police official.
