Mentally challenged girl thrashed for taking firewood in Odisha

Soro: A mentally challenged girl was tied to a tree and thrashed severely by some locals at Sajanpur village in Soro block of Balasore district three days ago. However, the matter came to fore after the video of the incident went viral yesterday.

According to sources, a mentally challenged girl identified as Rachana Lenka, daughter of Kartika Lenka had allegedly taken some firewood of one Bharat Sahoo of the same village. Irked over which Sahoo along with his family members tied the girl’s hands and legs and dragged her to a distance. They tied her to a tree and beat her mercilessly.

On the other hand, parents of the girl alleged that Sahoo family had offered them money to suppress the matter.

“My daughter had gone to collect firewood, but Bharat Sahoo, his wife Bharati, one Mahisura Sahoo and his wife Giria Sahoo beat her severely which I learnt after seeing the video. We are disturbed mentally and have spent three days without proper food due to this incident,” said Ratnamani, mother of Rachana.

“Now they want us to compromise the matter. But we want justice,” she added.

Meanwhile, Soro police has detained a man for interrogation for his alleged involvement in the incident.

“Two teams have been formed to probe the matter. The accused will be arrested soon and stringent action will be taken against them,” informed SDPO Balasore (Sadar) Prabhas Pal, after visiting the village.
