Medical student drowns in Odisha

Sambalpur: In a tragic incident, a medical student of Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) died after drowning in Hirakud reservoir of the district today.

The deceased was identified as Sumit Singh (22). He was a third-year MBBS student and is said to be a native of Rajasthan.

According to sources, the incident took place when Sumit, while taking bath along with his friends, accidentally slipped and drowned in the reservoir.

Sumit’s friends soon informed the fire brigade personnel who rushed to the spot and took him to the hospital after rescuing him. However, doctors who attended the medical student declared him brought dead.

While an investigation into the matter is underway by the local police, a pall of gloom descended on VIMSAR and the area following Sumit’s unfortunate death.
