Malkangiri: Red fear loomed large in Naxal infested Malkangiri district in the state again last night, after suspected members of outlawed CPI (Maoist) opened fire at a youth and injured him grievously.

The injured has been identified as Mangudu Banjami, a surrendered Maoist and a resident of Silakota village.

Around 10 heavily armed Maoists barged into Mangudu’s house at around 11.30 AM in the night and started reprimanding him against sensitising villagers to quit the red organisation as well as persuading cadres to surrender before police. Later they fired a round of bullet targeting the victim which struck him on the right thigh. After the victim bled profusely due to the injury and fell unconscious the rebels fled the spot presuming him to be dead.

Mangudu was taken to Podia CHC from where he was later shifted to Malkangiri DHH due to critical condition.

Locals said Mangudu was on Maoists’ target after he left their organisation around four years ago and returned to normal life.

Podia Police has launched a combing in Metaguda and Ramaguda areas in the district into which the Maoists are suspected to have sneaked, following the attack.

Earlier on Sunday, a combing party from Kudumulugumma BSF 153 Batallion base camp busted a Maoist camp located in Dayapada forest under Orkel police limits. Despite seizing a huge cache of explosives from the camp, the jawans failed to nab the Maoists.
