Maoist couple surrenders in Chhattisgarh

Malkangiri: In a blow to the Maoists during their ongoing Martyrs’ Week, a Red rebel couple surrendered before police in neighbouring Chhattisgarh State yesterday.

The couple identified as Rabindra alias Sana and his wife Reena laid down their arms before DM Awasthi, Special Director General (Anti-Naxal Operation), Chhattisgarh.

Rabindra and Reena were carrying Rs 5 lakh cash reward each on their heads.

Police said the couple remained active as Cadre Maoists under Chintalnar-Jagargunda Area Committee of outlawed CPI Maoist group after joining it in 2008. They were involved in several high profile operations carried out by Red rebels including Sukma Collector Alex Paul Menon’s abduction in 2012 and armed ambush on Chhattisgarh STF in the same year.

In a similar incident last Sunda, a Maoist couple identified as Mukesh and Ratna surrendered before Malkangiri SP Jagmohan Meena. They cited the cause of their surrender as, inclination towards Odisha Government’s developmental initiatives.

Notably, Maoists are observing Martyrs’ Week in the country from July 28-August 3.
