Malkangiri: In a blow to Maoists in Odisha during Martyrs’ Week observation, a wanted Maoist couple carrying cash rewards on their heads surrendered before Malkangiri Police here on Sunday.

The surrendered couple has been identified as Mukesh and his wife Ratna. The couple worked for the Andhra-Odisha Border Military Platoon of CPI Maoist group and remained active in the ‘Swabhiman’ area of Malkangiri.

Informing on the surrender to media Malkangiri SP Jagmohan Meena said, Mukesh and Ratna were involved in over 40 cases of Maoist violence and carrying Rs 4 lakh and Rs 1 lakh cash rewards on their heads which had been announced by the Odisha Government.

Disillusioned over top Maoist cadres’ involvement in immoral activities including sexual assault on women the couple made up its mind to lay down their arms. The recent inauguration of Gurupriya Bridge further encouraged them to return to the mainstream of life, added Meena.

The surrendered Maoists would be rehabilitated under the Surrender and Rehabilitation Scheme of Odisha Government which entitles them to build house, pursue study and undergo vocational training for employment.
