Man torches neighbour’s house after heated argument

house torchedSoro: In a bizarre incident, a man torched a neighbour’s house gutting property worth lakhs to avenge a verbal abuse at the Bankatira village in Jalda panchayat under Khaira police limits in Balasore district on Tuesday night. Police arrested the man who confessed to the crime on Wednesday.

The accused has been identified as Kamalakanta Jena of Bankatira village.

According to reports, some locals spotted smoke billowing out of the victim Sudhakar Nayak’s house in the village in the wee hours of Wednesday. They immediately raised an alarm and woke up the house owner, who was asleep in a nearby room. But by then, property worth lakhs, including two motorcycles and cycles, had been reduced to ashes. Later, villagers detained a local Kamalakanta Jena suspecting him to be involved in the incident and thrashed him brutally.

Khaira Police reached the spot and freed the accused from the clutches of the villagers later.

Informing about the incident, Khaira Police Station ASI H Pattayat said during his interrogation, the accused had confessed to the crime and said he set Sudhakar’s house afire following a heated argument with the latter in the morning the same day. During his confession, the accused also claimed that Sudhakar and a group of villagers were using foul language against him over the last couple of days which crossed all limits on the day of the incident compelling him to take the drastic step.
