Man mowed down by train at railway crossing

Angul: Proving railway track trespassing costly for a pedestrian, yet again a man was mowed down by a speeding train at Balaram Prasad level crossing under Banarpal Tehsil in the district in the wee hours of Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Prasant Kumar Sahoo of Ghantapada village.

The mishap took place at around 4 AM while the gate of the level crossing was down to let the Bhubaneswar-Rourkela Rajya Rani Express to cross the station. Prashant who was returning home in a hurry, tried to trespass the level crossing by sneaking under the gate and was struck by the Express. He got stuck to the wheels of the train and was dragged to a distance of around 1 kilometer before being killed.

Following the accident hundreds of locals led by Talcher MLA Braja Kishore Pradhan staged a ‘rail roko’ at the station and demanded a compensation for the kin of the victim. Rail traffic was affected for 6 hours due to the agitation.

The ‘rail roko’ was removed only after railway officials along with GRP personnel reached the spot and gave a compensation of Rs 1.30 lakh to the family members of the victim.
