Bhubaneswar: In a gruesome incident, a man burnt his pregnant wife alive in Patadei Slum in Mancheswar area of the city late on Friday night. The deceased has been identified as Sukanti Sandel.
One Bibhisan Sandel, a daily wage labourer, reportedly had a fight with his pregnant wife Sukanti over some reason, following which he strangulated her before setting her on fire.
The matter came to light when some neighbours rushed to Sandel’s house after hearing a commotion from the house. However, before they arrived on the spot, Sukanti had already died. The Mancheswar police reached at the spot after getting information from the locals and arrested the accused.
“We have registered a case under Section 149, 18, 498 (A), 304 (B), 302 of IPC against Bibhisan Sandel, the accused, who has been already arrested. The woman’s body has been sent to the Capital Hospital for autopsy,” informed Mancheswar IIC KP Mishra.
Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrata Bhoi said that “From the preliminary investigation, this murder seems to be a fallout of family dispute. We are waiting for the postmortem report to ascertain the real cause of the woman’s death. Further investigation into the matter is on.”
