Man arrested for stealing motorcycle on the pretext of test drive

Bhubaneswar: Police today arrested a 34-year old for allegedly stealing around 50 motorcycles on the pretext of test drive. Police have also recovered 16 motorcycles disposed of by him at various places in Nayagarh district. The accused has been identified as S. Amit Patra.

Police said that the accused was a native of Ganjam district who has been arrested earlier on several occasions for betting and gambling. “He later moved to Bhubaneswar and was staying in Bhimtangi area. He would use to keep a track on the classified websites and contact the intended sellers. After approaching the seller he would take the vehicles for a test drive and later disappear with the vehicles,” said a police official.

Further investigation revealed that Patra has stolen about 40 motorcycles in similar fashion.

Lately, the accused disappeared with the scooty owned by a girl from Laxmi Sagar this month. The victim later lodged a police complaint leading to his arrest.

“We are also interrogating a garage owner in this matter to recover more vehicles. Patra has been forwarded to the court,” added the police official.
