Main accused in Kurunti police van bomb hurling case held

Cuttack: Cracking the Kurunti village PCR van attack case of last Friday, in which at least 3 cops sustained injuries, police on Sunday arrested the main accused during an encounter in Kothapatana Mouza under Cuttack Sadar police limits in the district.

The accused identified as Uttam Singh alias Kabua, a resident of Kurunti village.

Sadar Police Station IIC Sudhanshu Bhusan Jena got a tip-off on the whereabouts of the criminal last night at around 8 PM and directed a police team to carry out a raid.

A police team led by ASI Ashok Kumar Patra rushed to TK Villa under Kothapatana Mouza where Kabua was seen and tried to catch him. However, the criminal opened fire at the police team in a bid to escape. As police returned fire Kabua was struck with a bullet on his left leg and was caught.

Police seized a 9mm pistol along with two live bullets from the possession of the criminal.

Kabua was rushed to the SCB Medical in Cuttack following his arrest where he is currently under treatment.

Kabua came under police’s radar after he along with some aides demanded extortion money of Rs 50,000 from a contractor Alokendu Das in Kurunti village a couple of days ago. After the later refused to pay the sum and lodged a complaint with police the accused barged into his house last Friday and started asking him for Rs 1 lakh for the mistake at the gun point. He hurled bombs at the victim’s house also. As a team of Cuttack Sadar Police reached out for Alokendu’s help the accused hurled bomb at their van and fled away.
