Maha Deepa raised atop Lord Lingaraj temple on time this year

Bhubaneswar: The ‘Maha Deepa’ (the grand earthen lamp) was raised atop Lord Lingaraj Temple here on time this year on the occasion of ‘Maha Shivratri’ at around 9.45 pm last night.

Soaked in religious fervour devotees in large numbers broke their fast after witnessing the installation of the lamp atop the temple as per the rituals. The same was carried amidst chanting of ‘Omm Namah Shivay’ and ‘Har Har Mahadev’ mantra by the crowd.

Devotees started making a beeline at the Lord Lingaraj temple starting from the early evening and a jampacked crowd was witnessed at the temple by the late night. They sat with their lit lamps and performed puja while waiting for the raising of the ‘Maha Deepa’.

As per the practice, several other Lord Shiva shrines in the temple city perform the ‘Maha Deepa’ raising post the installation of the lamp atop the Lord Lingaraj Temple.
