Angul: Tension prevailed on National Highway-55 near RTO office in Angul town last night, after a group of unidentified miscreants looted an oil tanker and locals thrashed one of them and thrashed mercilessly before handing over to police.
The incident took place late in the night while at least three bike-borne looters intercepted the tanker on the highway. After dragging out the driver from the vehicle they snatched away cash worth Rs 19,000 from him and later tried to flee away with the tanker.
However, some locals and passers-by reached the spot hearing the screaming of the driver and managed to nab one of the looters. Later, the accused was tied up to a roadside pole and mercilessly beaten up by the angry mob.
The accused was rescued only after Angul Police reached the spot to arrest him. Cops also seized a bike used by the looters from him.
Police have launched a manhunt to nab the absconding looters who have managed to flee with the tanker from the spot.
