Loan burden forces farmer to end life in Odisha

Sambalpur: In a tragic incident, a farmer committed suicide allegedly over crop loss and loan burden at Khulia village under Maneswar block of the district today. The deceased peasant has been identified as Lalit Barik.

According to his family members, Barik had taken a loan of around Rs 10 lakh to cultivate different crops on his 10 acres land. However, the crops were damaged due to incessant heavy rainfall in the area.

Barik was under stress over repayment of the loan after he noticed the damaged crops, following which he consumed pesticide last night.

Family members with the help of the neighbours, admitted him to the Burla-based VIMSAR. However, he breathed his last this morning while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Based on the allegation of the kin of the deceased farmer, local police have started an investigation into the matter.
