Balasore: Court work was badly hit in the District and Sessions Judge Court here today after the members of Balasore Bar Association staged a cease-work stir demanding a permanent Orissa High Court bench in North Odisha.

During the stir, which was held as a token protest against the dilly dallying on the part of the government in addressing the long standing demand for the bench, the agitating lawyers submitted a memorandum to the District Collector Ramesh Chandra Rout addressed to the Chief Justice of Orissa High Court.

“Through the memorandum we have demanded immediate setting up of a High Court bench at Balasore taking into consideration the fact that people in the district are suffering a lot, both physically and financially, in absence of it. They have to travel to Cuttack even in small cases,” said Gopinath Mohanty, a senior advocate and a member of the association.

“We also demand immediate appointment of office bearers in at least six posts which are lying vacant in the criminal court here. The staff crunch is creating major backlog in the court and we demand immediate appointment of a Judicial First Class Magistrate to dispose those cases,” added Mohanty.

Meanwhile, the agitating lawyers have warned the government to intensify their strike in the coming days by staging cease-work stir on every Monday and Saturday of the week if the demands are not met at the earliest.
