Lawyers-Police Face-Off: Supreme Court directs Lawyers to join duty

Cuttack: The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the agitating lawyers to join their duty soon.

While conducting the hearing of the lawyers-police face-off case this afternoon, the apex court asked the Orissa High Court Bar Association and other connected associations to end the strike and resume the court work.

The SC also directed Odisha DGP RP Sharma to transfer the investigation to Crime Branch IGP.

Notably, the lawyers had begun their cease-work agitation after a lawyer, identified as Debi Prasad Patnaik, was attacked by the some cops near Nua Bazar bridge here on August 28. The agitating advocates had demanded arrest of the police personnel involved in the incident.

Later, Cuttack DCP Akhileswar Singh had suspended Constables BK Samal and UK Bhuyan along with Havildar PK Behera.

However, the lawyers continued their strike reiterating their demands. They staged protests in front of all government offices in Cuttack and even had decided to gherao Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s residence in Bhubaneswar.

The lawyers had also approached the Supreme Court seeking the arrest of the cops, following which the state Crime Branch on Tuesday night had arrested Home Guard Kishore Jena and Dillip Singh over their alleged role in the attack on the lawyer.
