Lawyer-Police Spat: Orissa High Court defers hearing to November 15

Cuttack: The Orissa High Court today deferred the hearing in the case of policemen’s alleged assault on a lawyer in the city to November 15.

The decision on the part of the court came as the Crime Branch sought more time to submit a detailed charge sheet against the accused in the case for the court’s perusal.

Notably, it is the third occasion on which the court has deferred the hearing in the case the last one being yesterday, after the Crime Branch wanted more time from it.

Against the Crime Branch’s appeal for a six weeks’ time for submission of the chargesheet on November 9 the court had allowed it to submit a detailed report on November 12. However, it was again given an extra day to complete its work yesterday.

The lawyers are on a cease-work agitation since a lawyer, identified as Debi Prasad Patnaik, was attacked by a group of cops near Nua Bazar bridge in Cuttack on August 28. Later, taking action in the case Cuttack DCP Akhileswar Singh had already suspended Constables BK Samal and UK Bhuyan along with Havildar PK Behera.
