Langur Born In Nandankanan Zoo A Day After Father’s Death

Bhubaneswar: A day after a 17-year-old male Nilgiri langur died at the Nandankanan zoo on Friday, a baby langur was born today bringing much relief for the zoo authorities.

Zoo officials said that a female Nilgiri langur, the partner of the dead male langur, has delivered a baby langur at enclosure 55 on Saturday morning. “The baby is in good condition and mother langur is holding it under her belly. The gender of the newborn is yet to be ascertained,” said a zoo official.

The male Nilgiri langur which died on Friday was brought to Nandankanan from Chennai’s Arignar Anna Zoological Park in 2017.

Prior to the death of the male langur, 41-year-old Orangutan ‘Binny’ had also died at the zoo on Wednesday due to acute pneumonia and hepatitis.
