Paradip: Hundreds of displaced and land losers’ families from Handia village staged a sit-in protest before Essar Steel company here today and demanded immediate fulfillment of their long standing demands.

Villagers under the aegis of Gramya Surakhya Samiti, an association of Essar displaced people, resorted to sloganeering and stopped workers of the plant from entering into the office premises as a part of their protest. The production of the plant came to a halt for several hours due to the ongoing protest.

Villagers demanded vocational training for members of the displaced families along with job and stipend by Essar company. They also demanded regularisation of jobs of all 27 persons who have been absorbed by the company from the village.

Villagers decided to take to the streets after a meeting between Gramya Surakhya Samiti and Essar authority held last month in the presence of Paradip Lock Police failed to yield any result. Though the company authorities promised to look into the demands of the villagers, they failed to keep that later.

Villagers have warned to intensify their stir in the coming days in case Essar authority makes further delay in addressing their legitimate demands.
