Kurnool Stone Quarry Mishap: Another Odia Labourer dies, Death Toll rises to 6

Ganjam: Another Odia labourer injured in the stone quarry explosion of Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh died under treatment Sunday morning. With this, the death toll of Odia labourers killed in the explosion rose to six.

The deceased identified as Rama Chandra Nahak of Biti Nuagaon village under Rambha police limits of the district died while undergoing treatment at the King George Hospital in Visakhapatnam.

All the killed six Odia labourers belong to the Ganjam district.

On August 3, the day of the mishap, two Odia labourers- Duryodhan Nahak and Manoranjan Nahak of Bandhatala Nuagaon village died on the spot. Another Bhimasen Nahak of Jharedi Radhagobindpur breathed his last the following day.

Another labourer, Rajendra Nahak from Diandein village  breathed his last on August 7 while the other injured, Pandav Lenka of Bandha Tala Nuagaon village, undergoing treatment at Aluru government hospital died on August 10.

All the migrant labourers had got the job at the private stone quarry through labour contractor Kailash Nahak of Bandhatala Nuagaon village.

Odisha Government had sent a two-member fact-finding team consisting of Ganjam district District Labour Welfare Officer and Rural Labour Inspector to Kurnool.

Andhra Pradesh government had announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh each for the family of the deceased. Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik on August 6 announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of the deceased and free treatment to the injured labourers.

The Kurnool police had arrested five persons, including owner of quarry Srinivasa Chowdary from Karnataka Srinivasa Chowdary and two Odias. One of the two arrested includes Kailash Nahak, the contractor who provided jobs.
