Koraput: In a tragic incident, the Kunduli gang rape survivor committed suicide on Monday. She took the extreme step by hanging herself at her house.
The minor tribal girl was rushed to the Kunduli hospital in an unconscious state where doctors declared her dead. Sources said that the girl committed suicide in the absence of her family members. After failing to get justice, she was under severe mental pressure which prompted her to end her life, added the sources.
Tension prevailed on the premises of the hospital following her death. Pottangi police have reached the spot and a pall of gloom has descended in the area following the death of the gang rape victim.
The class IX student of Sorisapadar village under Pottangi police limits of the district was allegedly gang raped by four security personnel while she was returning from the Kunduli Haat (market) on October 10, 2017 that created a huge public outcry in the state.
Initially, she was admitted to the Kunduli hospital, but later shifted to the Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput. She was discharged after her health condition improved on October 30.
She was given admission at the Tribal Welfare (TRW) School at Kotapad in the district after OHRC directed the state government. However, the officials of District Child Welfare Committee (CWC) admitted the minor girl at the Koraput hospital again on November 18 after she vomited for several times. The victim was even counselled by psychologists.
Later, the gang rape survivor was shifted to the ICU in SCB Medical College and Hospital on November 20, 2017. However, she got discharged from the medical on November 27 and her family members took her home on the following day after submitting a written assurance to the Koraput CWC.
Taking serious note of the public outrage over the gang rape, Odisha police on October 11, 2017 had marked the heinous crime as a ‘Red Flag Case’ (a sensational case of crime against women which is dealt with top priority).
Later, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had also given order for a judicial inquiry into the sensitive case. However, the accused remained still at large.
Police had interrogated four local youths but failed to identify the accused.
Demanding arrest of the accused and adequate compensation for the victim, Maoists and the state unit of Congress separately staged demonstrations at different places. Besides, they had observed bandh in few southern districts of the state.
Everyone was taken by surprise with the Koraput district police and medical report ruling out her gang rape allegation. However, the deceased had alleged that police had continuously pressurised her to change her statement mentioned in the FIR. She even claimed that police had offered her money in this regard.
Alleging police inaction over the matter, she had twice attempted suicide earlier.
