Koraput: Tension ran high in Koraput district today after family members of Kunduli gang rape victim who committed suicide yesterday, took away her body from Kunduli CHC and staged a road blockade on NH 26 keeping it there.

Hundreds of locals from Kunduli and adjoining areas took part in the road blockade staged near the Kunduli Chhak on the NH and demanded immediate ouster of Police DIG and Koraput SP from the district holding them responsible for the suicide. Strikers also demanded their suspension along with the doctors who conducted the medical examination of the victim following the incident.

Earlier in the day, family members of the deceased accompanied by former Congress MP from Nabarangpur Pradeep Majhi reached the CHC and demanded the body from the medical staff. After the authorities did not agree to do so, they forcefully took it away sparking tension for quite some time in the CHC.

Meanwhile, a Congress team led by OPCC president Prasad Harichandan has reached Koraput to take stock of the situation and a state-wide agitation is expected after he returns to Bhubaneswar.

Koraput Collector, Additional Collector, and Semiliguda Tehsildar have also reached the blockade area and are trying to pacify the agitators.

On the other hand, Odisha BJP has given a 12-hr bandh call in undivided Korput district including Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada and Nabarangpur protesting the victim’s suicide. It has also demanded a CBI inquiry into the issue dubbing the suicide of the victim as a state government sponsored killing.

Notably, the victim girl from Sorisapadar village was allegedly gang raped by four men dressed up in the uniform of Central paramilitary force jawans on October 10, while she was returning from Kunduli market. She hung herself to death yesterday at her home, after failing to get justice.
