Koraput Stone Quarry Mishap: Site Manager held, tension grips victim’s village

Jeypore: The Koraput Police on Friday arrested the Site Manager of DD Builders, Bijay Kumar Jha in connection with the Bariput stone quarry mishap which took lives of at least two JCB operators following a hill caving on May 31.

Informing on the arrest to media, Koraput Additional SP VR Rao said Jha was arrested for dereliction of duty.

Meanwhile, tension prevailed in Khuntakata village under Athargarh area in Cuttack district, which happens to be the native  of one of the deceased JCB operator Sanjay Das, after his body reached there this morning. A joint rescue team of ODRAF, NDRF, Fire Brigade and Army succeeded in pulling out the body from under the heap of boulders last evening after a Herculean effort of almost 15 days at the Telengir Irrigation Project, the accident site.

Angry villagers staged a road blockade on Khuntuni-Narasinghpur in Khuntakata and brought down the traffic flow through the route to a grinding halt. The blockade was lifted only after the administration gave an assurance of action on the guilty within 10 days.

Notably, an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the victim duos families has been promised from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund along with an additional amount of Rs 1 lakh from Red Cross in the case.

The other victim JCB operator Ghanashyam Guru’s body was recovered from the accident site by the rescue team and handed over to his family on June 13.
