Bhubaneswar: Koraput Congress MLA, Krushna Chandra Sagaria today announced his resignation as a lawmaker on moral ground over injustice to Kunduli gangrape victim and her subsequent suicide.

“I feel that as a lawmaker I have failed to ensure justice to the Kunduli gangrape victim. Holding me accountable for the failure I have decided to resign as an MLA. My step also forms a part of my protest against the injustice which was made to the poor dalit girl in Koraput,” Sagaria said in a statement.

Despite my resignation I will continue to fight for SCs and Dalits of Odisha. I will travel from village to village to spread the message. On December 6 which is Dr B R Ambedkar’s death anniversary, I will start my journey from Bhubaneswar,” said Sagaria.

Sagaria said he will meet Odisha Assembly Speaker in a short while to tender his resignation.

Sagaria had been elected to the Odisha Assembly from Koraput Assembly Constituency in Congress ticket in 2014. However, later in June this year he landed in controversy after levelling allegation of casteist remark against senior party leader and Jeypore MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati

Notably, the Kunduli victim was gangraped while returning home from market under Pottangi police limits in Koraput district in October, last year. She committed suicide at her house on January 22.
