Kite flying thread death in Cuttack: Police conduct raids, 2 manjaa sellers detained

Cuttack: After death of a youth yesterday due to the glass coated banned manjaa kite flying thread in Cuttack of Odisha, Police today conducted a series of raids to catch the manjaa thread sellers. So far two traders have been detained for questioning in this regard.

It is to be noted that yesterday a youth was killed in Pirbazar area in Jagatpur of Cuttack when he was on the way to his father-in-law’s house on his bike along with his wife. When the two were passing through Pirbazar area the rider got entangled with manjaa thread of a kite which slit his throat and accordingly later he died.

It is to be noted that use and sell of manja thread has been banned in the State. Manjaa thread is a glass coated string that is used to fly kite. The thread easily cuts the thread of other kites as it is sharp due to the glass coating. However, the thread is so sharp it can also slit human throat or any other part of body. And hence this type of thread has been banned for use and sell.

Taking action after yesterday’s unfortunate death of the youth, Jagatpur Police today interrogated some youths. Also, Purighat Police conducted a series of raids in the shops of Pithapur and Jholasahi area where items used for kite are sold. Police are also searching for the persons who were flying kite in the area when the unfortunate incident took place yesterday.

Cuttack DCP Prateek Singh has said that directive has been issued for checking of manjaa thread selling and use. A special drive has been launched in this regard. Legal action will be taken against the manufacturers of manjaa thread.

In the death case of yesterday, autopsy of the body was performed and the body was handed over to the family members today.
