KIMS becomes 1st hospital in Eastern India to provide ECMO service

Bhubaneswar: The city-based Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) became the first hospital in Eastern India to provide Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) service to patients.

The hospital authorities, in a press meet informed that the ECMO service was first successfully given to a patient on December 7 on a trial basis. But now, the service will be provided to the needy patients regularly. Specialists have been appointed to operate the ECMO machine.

ECMO, also known as extracorporeal life support (ECLS) is an extracorporeal technique of providing prolonged cardiac and respiratory support to persons whose heart and lungs are unable to provide an adequate amount of gas exchange or perfusion to sustain life.

The hospital, founded by noted educationist Dr. Achyuta Samanta has also got Electrophysiology studies (EPS) machine for the first time. The EPS is a minimally invasive procedure that tests the electrical conduction system of the heart to assess the electrical activity and conduction pathways of the heart.

Medical Superintendent Dr. P.K Patnaik, CTVS Surgeon Dr BB Mishra, Cardiologists Dr. Anupam Jena and Dr. Panchanan Sahoo were among others who attended the press meet.
