Keonjhar: A couple hailing from Upardiha Village in the district, have made a request to the President of India demanding active euthanasia for their 24-year-old son.

Dhaneswar Behera along with wife Sandhyarani Behera has made the request owing to their inability to meet the medical expenses of their son Rajesh.

The couple said that Rajesh is their only son who has been diagnosed with ‘Wilson’s disease’ a rare genetic disorder.

“Besides he is also suffering from liver ailments. We have been visiting several hospitals since March 2010. We have spent all our savings on his treatment. We cannot afford his treatment costing around Rs 4000 every month with my meagre salary of Rs 7200,” said the father, a contractual teacher by profession.

The father further said that help provided through the Biju Krushaka Kalyana Yojana and Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana is not adequate for the medical expenses. “Despite our attempt to obtain a certificate of disability, we are yet to be provided with the certificate. In this scenario, we are not able to look after our child. So we have requested the President of India for active euthanasia for him,” added the father.
