Jumbo tramples elderly man to death in Dhenkanal

Dhenkanal: In yet another case of man-animal conflict in the State, a wild tusker trampled an elderly man to death in Kumusi Dengeisuni area under Mahabir Road Forest Range in Dhenkanal district today.

The deceased has been identified as Narottam Dehury, a resident of Sogora village under Tumusingha police limits.

Narottam, a guard by profession has been engaged on duty at a cashew plantation in the village last night where the mishap took place. He had gone out of his room to attend nature’s call in the wee hours today at around 4 am when suddenly bumped into a wild tusker which had sneaked into the garden in search of food.

The jumbo pounced on the victim and threw him to a distance with its trunk to later trample to death.

After getting intimation, forest officials accompanied by Sanda Outpost in-charge rushed to the spot and sent the body for autopsy.

Later, a compensation of Rs 40,000 was handed over to the next of kin of the victim by Mahabir Road Ranger.

The incident has left the locals in the area in a state of panic.
