Jumbo herd wreaks havoc in Mayurbhanj village, destroys 16 houses in 4 days

Mayurbhanj: Creating panic among the villagers under Karanjia forest division in Mayurbhanj a herd of wild elephants destroyed three more houses in Takulipala village under Raruan block last night.

As per the report, the jumbo herd comprising of 22 elephants of different age groups, which was spotted roaming around the village for past four days, sneaked into the Takulipala village late last night and attacked one Birsin Purti’s house.

The pachyderms also ate up the rice grains stored in the house before leaving the spot.

Villagers called up forest department officials and reported the matter later in the night.

Notably, the residents in villages under Karanjia have held forest staff responsible for last night’s incident claiming that despite continuous appeal on the jumbo menace they are not taking appropriate action to drive the herd away. In last four days the herd had damaged at least 16 houses in different villages and caused significant damage to paddy crops, they added.
