Biripada: Hundreds of contractual workers Jindal Steel Pellet Plant on Wednesday staged dharna at the main gate of the plant at Barbil in Keonjhar district of Odisha to press their various demands including salary hike.

The protesting workers alleged that they have been working in the pellet plant under the Thejo Engineering Ltd since six years at very low salary. They pointed out that a contractual junior technician gets Rs 7300, while the company pays the double amount of salary to its permanent employees of the same rank.

“Instead of providing permanent posts to us, the JSPL has been giving a low salary to us,” a protestor alleged saying with the amount of salary they receive is too difficult to lead a normal life.

Their other demands include shift allowance, dust allowance, medical allowance and bonus.

The workers also warned that if the plant authorities will not fulfill their demand at the earliest, they will intensify their protest in the days ahead.
